MATTHEW SIBLEY VANITAS ART.

My work is based around the theme of vanitas art. I am interested in the passage of time and the wider spiritual & philosophical questions that surround mortality. My sculptures, which I create outdoors, are designed to weather with time passing and this process is integral to their appearance. They refer to African fetish figures in the materials which I use such as nails, string & fabric. They can be viewed with trust, reverence or superstition; whichever, their impact is shaped by the experiences the viewer brings to them.
